About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Both journalists and his fellow rappers have accused Ja Rule of biting the rhyming styles of 2Pac and DMX -- and of making music more suited for MTV than the streets -- but his fans keep America's premier R&B thug swimming in platinum and ice. Following the success of 2001's Pain Is Love, the gravel-voiced rapper sticks to his winning formula: club bangers and raunchy ballads custom-made for heavy radio rotation. In the past, Ja's crossover success has been boosted by winning collaborations with the ladies of soul -- Jennifer Lopez, Mary J. Blige, and his protégée Ashanti -- but The Last Temptation announces itself with a shot of testosterone in the form of the melodic lead single "Thug Lovin' " with Bobby "King of R&B" Brown. Like Uncle L, however, it's the ladies who love Ja Rule the most, and Murder Inc. molls Ashanti and Charli Baltimore appear on several tracks, including "Mesmerize" and the title cut, respectively. Other highlights include the Neptunes-blessed "Pop Niggas" and a remix of "The Pledge" (originally found on Irv Gotti Presents: The Remixes), featuring newly signed Murder Inc. artist Nas and a poetic snippet from 2Pac. Although The Last Temptation won't convert any of Ja Rule's detractors, commercial rap fans will find its R&B grooves and hook-happy formula hard to resist. Ron Hart, Barnes & Noble

July 27, 2004: Sorry to disappoint you Ja lovers, but he is not the best MC out today and this album proves it. This is the album where Ja let's loose his pop side, trading in the hardcore bangers that he had on his other albums for poppy love songs and a fake gangsta attitude. But I won't hate on this album too much, because the decent songs are really good. "Connected" has Ja rhyming over somewhat of a West Coast sounding beat. Now most of these songs are 2Pac sounding songs, and in "The Pledge Remix", Ja totally steals Pac's beat from "So Many Tears" and only has Pac reciting the words from the beginning of 'Tears'. Ashanti does sing nicely though and Nas drops a great verse. "The Warning" is another song that sounds like Pac wrote it, but Ja seems to hook you into the song. "The Reign" is probably one of the best songs on the album. Great verses(again 2Pacish) and a great chorus. But the rest of the album is disappointing. "Mesmerize" is one of the cheesiest pop songs I've ever heard, and "Pop N*****" tries to sound hard, but Ja fails when he decides to let the Neptunes provide a poppy beat that in the end you cannot take Ja seriously. "Thug Lovin" is a surprising collaboration with Bobby Brown" and is probably the best pop song on the album, though it still fails. "Murder Me" is a horrible song that makes no sense and puts Murda Inc's hardest rapper Cadillac Tah on a love song. "Emerica" is again a good pop song but isn't pleasing. Then we come to "Rock Star" where Ja decides to become a rock star instead of a rapper or a pop singer. The song fails miserably and leaves those who still respect Ja wondering, will he ever go back to the old days.
