About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Bluegrass legend and former Stanley Brother member and current Lonesome Rambler Larry Sparks' first release for fellow country icon Del McCoury's McCoury Music label doesn't deviate much from the lauded singer/guitar player's winning blend of heartbreak, salvation and furious picking; and why should it? Sparks has been schooling the rest of the world in the gospel of bluegrass since the 1960s. Last Suit You Wear features 12 ballads and breakdowns that rely heavily on Sparks masterful hands and mournful delivery, as well as the talents of high profile guests like J.D. Crowe, Don Rigsby, Randy Kohrs, Stuart Duncan, Ron Stewart and McCoury himself. From the dusty, mid-tempo strains of "Old Coal Mine" to the rowdy lament "Those Blues Eyes Don't Sparkle Anymore," Sparks and his gang of bluegrass brothers have created some required listening for incoming students. October 24, 2007: Larry Sparks has been around, almost since the day Bill Monroe was credited with `inventing' bluegrass music... and it's only appropriate that he becomes the first artist to release an album on legendary Del McCoury's new record label. It doesn't hurt that it's just about the best damn bluegrass album you're ever going to listen to...Larry Sparks is absolutely stunning with the simplicity of his delivery of the material here...always subdued, but at the same time, exciting as hell. The album's title track is a great `message' song with a neat twist and there are similar winners in touching story songs Casualty Of War and The Old Coal Mine. Listen also for some laid back winners in I'm Country and Nothing More, Hand in Hand, and For Your Love, the latter written by Matt and Dave Lindsey with Michael Keith (who briefly made his home recently in Nova Scotia).
