About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

This "best of" compilation offers 19 sweeping musical selections from Karl Jenkins's three best-selling Adiemus albums: SONGS OF SANCTUARY, ADIEMUS II: CANTATA MUNDI, and ADIEMUS III: DANCES OF TIME. Jenkins, a classically trained composer, polished his craft by writing music for television commercials, like the famous De Beers diamond ads. He creates his exotic brocade of sound with live orchestra, percussion (not repetitive rhythm grooves), and women's voices arranged with tight vocal harmonies reminiscent of Balkan choirs. Miriam Stockley is the star vocalist, whose sensual yet angelic solos and overdubs are essential to Adiemus's sound, but Jenkins also enlists the voices of Mary Carewe and the Adiemus Singers, a Finnish vocal ensemble. (Don't worry If you can't understand the lyrics; Adiemus sings in an invented language.) Jenkins's style is recognizable throughout the album, but each composition bursts with its own distinctive wave of rhapsodic melody, dynamic tension, and intriguing syncopation. Some tracks are as spiritual as a liturgical chant, while some waltz and cavort like courtly dances. Even in delicate pieces -- as in the airy interplay between orchestra, French horn, and voices on "Beyond the Century" -- Jenkins delivers an encompassing "wall of sound" experience. Highly recommended. Carol Wright, Barnes & Noble

June 05, 2003: I LOVE this CD!!! I'm using some of the songs for circus performances. The songs have great variance in volume and tempo. Some of them are very "Cirque Du Soleil-sounding" with an African flavor. The songs I am presently using for performances are "In Caelum Fero" (But I am using the longer version, which I believe is in either the ADIEMUS LIVE or the ADIEMUS: SONGS OF SANCTUARY CD.) and "Ein Wiener Walzer." No matter how many times I practice routines, I never get tired of these songs. There are several other songs I am anxious to develop routines for! I am also a singer, and I appreciate beautiful voices and harmonizing--check out "Hymn", "Beyond the Century", "Cantilena", "Cantus, Song of Tears", etc. Not adding this CD to your collection would be a mistake!

December 09, 2002: This recording, combining selections from ?Adiemus: Songs of Sanctuary?, ?Adiemus II: Cantata Mundi? and ?Adiemus III: Dances of Time?, is powerful, moving and utterly fascinating. In the uniquely compelling music of Adiemus, the female voice becomes a true instrument, with the freedom to use vowel and consonance as pure sound, unrestricted by verbal meaning. Miriam Stockley and a sextet of female vocalists sing the whimsical, wordless phonetics of composer/director Karl Jenkins, backed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the electro-acoustic percussion of Jody Jenkins, and recorder solos by Pamela Thorby (of the Palladian Ensemble). Karl Jenkins? compositions are difficult to categorize, but in addition to close harmonies and distinctly modern choral and orchestral sensibilities, there are strong shades of the vocal and percussive celebrations found in the music of Africa and the Pacific islands. The selections are generally cheerful and upbeat, and at all times enthusiastically sung. This is a group you really have to hear! Come along and join their celebration of life and the human spirit!
