About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Essentially, Isle of View is The Pretenders' "unplugged" album. Chrissie Hynde runs through 15 of the group's songs, from hits like "Back on the Chain Gang" to more obscure numbers like "Lovers of Today." Occasionally, she is backed by a string quartet, including on a drastically rearranged (and poorly conceived) "Kid," but the the strings aren't as effective or startling as the piano of Blur's Damon Albarn on "I Go to Sleep." Even though it features a number of reinterpretations of some of The Pretenders' greatest songs, Isle of View is one of the group's lesser efforts, simply because none of the new versions surpass the originals. February 23, 2009: This CD is chock full of beautiful, crisp vocals from Chrissie Hynde with orchestral backgrounds. Some folks complained about the fact that this CD doesn't "rock", but that's not the point (and no matter how Chrissie Hynde sings Brass in Pocket, it rocks). These songs are presented like a meditation on these themes and Chrissie Hynde puts herself into them 100%. You won't regret sharing the time with her and the musicians that support her effort.

June 16, 2004: I LOVE THIS ALBUM! Now for hardcore Pretenders fans, you may not like it being its acoustic with strings and all, but this album gives you a chance to become more intimate with their songs. The lyrics really have a chance to shine through-I really like "I Hurt You" and "I Go to Sleep". A definite must-have.
