Editorial Reviews

Although performed with the typical Celtic accompaniment -- tin whistles, bodhrans and the like -- the jigs and reels which comprise David Kincaid's solo debut, The Irish Volunteer, are anything but typical Celtic fare. Dedicated to the memory of the 160,000 Irish soldiers who fought with the Northern forces during the American Civil War, the record rescues the soldiers' long-lost traditional songs from the mists of time -- in researching the material, Kincaid found only the title cut intact with musical notation; the others were found in broadsides and lyric books with only vague allusions to their melodies, forcing the singer to painstakingly re-create the songs in the spirit of their era. Kincaid's efforts were certainly worth it -- The Irish Volunteer sheds new light on the music of one of the truly defining periods of American history, restoring the Irish soldiers' songs to their rightful place in the Civil War canon.
