About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Joni Mitchell evolved from the smooth jazz-pop of Court and Spark to the radical Hissing of Summer Lawns, an adventurous work that remains among her most difficult records. After opening with the graceful "In France They Kiss on Main Street," the album veers sharply into "The Jungle Line," an odd, Moog-driven piece backed by the rhythms of the warrior drums of Burundi -- a move into multiculturalism that beat the likes of Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, and Sting to the punch by a decade. While not as prescient, songs like "Edith and the Kingpin" and "Harry's House -- Centerpiece" are no less complex or idiosyncratic, employing minor-key melodies and richly detailed lyrics to arrive at a strange and beautiful fusion of jazz and shimmering avant pop. April 23, 2007: If something is popular with the masses it must not have that quality which makes things " special"..... this is the only explanation for the public's failure to connect with THOSL. Ahead of its time, the treasures contained grow with every spin. " In France They Kiss on The Main Street" is a straight ahead rocker, celebrating the birth of rock and roll with a fevered reverence. " The Jungle Line" is a pioneer in world music, paving the way for Paul Simon and Sting, using the moog and Burundi drums to illustrate the trampling of a hungry society. "Edith and the Kingpin" is not your average character song, but the underworld it represents can easily be pictured, given Mitchell's discerning pen and piano. Each song could have its own description, but suffice to say that anyone interested in expanding his horizons should pick this one up. The exploration of the male/female saga, particularly in " Harry's House/Centerpiece" is worth the cost of admission. Get in on the secret that's been around for over thirty years!
