About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Etta James Big, bold blues belter Etta James throws down a serious change of pace on HEART OF A WOMAN. This time out, the reigning First Lady of the Blues trips the light fantastic with a crossover sound that harnesses her raw power with a much smoother sound. Embracing a set of old and new standards with a pop-jazz treatment, James turns in the laid-back vocal performance of a very sated-sounding diva. Scorched-earth blues gives way to cooler material. Brazilian-tinged acoustic guitar creates a mellow mood on the opening, "You Don't Know What Love Is." That hint of Rio is repeated as James takes on "My Old Flame," "I Only Have Eyes for You," and "Say It Isn't So." Fans of her rowdier outings take note: There are remakes of some of James's classics -- "At Last," "Sunday Kind of Love," and "Only Women Bleed" -- but these too have been made over with a softer touch. February 28, 2003: Mrs. James? voice remains superb, but this album shows how bad arrangements can affect a serious work. If you like synthethizers and you don?t mind if a CD seems to be recorded in the studio of your cousin room, go ahead. This CD doesn?t make justice to the great vocal resources and serious career of Etta James. She deserves more, I think.

January 18, 2001: The material here are some of the great American popular standards, but in my opinion Etta just doesn't delivery the goods. It's not that she isn't in good voice, but rather the ultra-modern arrangements that just doesn't cut it here. I guess after hearing her other classic cd's in which she preforms some great standards(Time After Time, Mystery Lady-Songs of Billie Holiday) I was expecting a lot more. Once again, it's the arrangements that I just can't seem to swallow. Maybe it's me, but before you go out and buy this cd drop me a line----I'll be happy to send you mine.
