Editorial Reviews

Any goth metal band fronted by a woman post-2003 is going to be compared to Evanescence, whether they like it or not. And while they're probably sick to death of hearing this comparison, Within Temptation's fourth full-length overall, 2007's The Heart of Everything, will especially garner some comparing/contrasting to Amy Lee and company. But here's the catch for newcomers to the band: Within Temptation has been around longer than Evanescence. That said, give a listen to the male-female duet "What Have You Done," which sees Within Temptation frontwoman Sharon Den Adel paired with Life of Agony's Keith Caputo -- and guess what song it sounds a bit like (yes, you guessed it: "Bring Me to Life"!). Elsewhere, the sextet isn't afraid to get downright symphonic, even on the ballad "Frozen" plus the metallic rock of the title track and "Hand of Sorrow" (the latter of which combines both approaches, sounding a bit like Meat Loaf's latter day epics). And you've got to love a song that was inspired after a viewing of Braveheart (the aforementioned title track), which explains the sweeping "cinematics" that are on display throughout The Heart of Everything. November 16, 2009: I got this album of iTunes not too awful long ago, but had forgotten I had it for a few days, but finally just remembered it and gave it a listen, and wow! This is an amazing CD! I was not previously familiar with this group, but iTunes listed it as a personal recoomend, and I sampled a little of it and thought it sounded pretty neat, so I went ahead and bought it, and I love it! I will definitely be checking out more of their stuff in the near future! For any of you who like good Goth rock music or just enjoy cool sounding music, go to your nearest Barnes & Noble or wherever and get this album! It's awesome!

March 30, 2009: It's not often one finds a disc that delivers from the first track to the last. This is one of those discs. Within Temptation is a Dutch band that defies standard, or even extended genres. It has been described as 'goth metal', but even the band's lead singer, Sharon den Adel says that doesn't accurately describe the band. I would agree but would suggest some of their songs are what 'goth' metal sounds like to me. It could be described as 'symphonic metal', but don't have any impressions that this is all about violins and harps. Within Temptation throws its metal at you, full force, with symphonic elements filling in the sound to wrap around you.

The easy comparison is with Evanescence and that is accurate enough. However, I was an Evanescence fan before I found Within Temptation and now, while I still appreciate them, Evanescence seems rather flat in comparison.

If you want to try out a track or two from your favorite download site, try "The Howling" if you'd like a track with serious drive. If you like a haunting sound, try "Forgiven."

I Also Recommend: Black Symphony, Dark Passion Play, Fallen, The Open Door, The Infinite Wonders of Creation.
