About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Columbia has been Diamond's label since 1973, and it acquired the rights to his Bang material of 1966-1968. But MCA still controls the recordings from 1968-1973. That's why (although you won't find out by reading the album cover) this two-disc, 37-track retrospective consists of the original versions of such hits as "Cherry, Cherry" (1966) and "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" (1978) but covers the middle period with re-recordings and live renditions of 13 of Diamond's biggest hits. As such, this collection gets only a qualified recommendation. William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

December 06, 2009: It isn't specified anywhere on the packaging, but most of the songs were recorded at concerts rather than in the studio. Which a lot of artists do, but which (in this case) very much alters the finished product. Neal's voice wasn't at its the prime, and he also changes the versions slightly. The result is many of my favorite songs (Cracklin' Rosie, I Am...I Said, Play Me) were a bitter disappointment.

There is no question Neal is a brilliant songwriter and consummate performer. But if I had known I wasn't getting the studio versions which made the hit charts in the first place, I would not have bought this CD collection, but the individual CDs instead.

By far one of Neil Diamonds best!!!by Anonymous
