This delicious two-CD compilation offers the youngest of the Three Tenors at his vocal peak, in recordings mostly from the 1970s and early '80s. His hectic bravado and smooth tones make Carreras sound like an authentic Latin lover. Here, he's ardent and impulsive, just like the opera characters he's portrayed memorably, from Rodolfo in "La Bohème" to Mario in "Tosca." Arias from these operas are accompanied pliantly by the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, conducted by Colin Davis. Rounding out this generous set are beloved Italian songs like "O Sole Mio" and "Mattinata." Never has "Funiculî, funiculà" sounded more like a toreador's cry of triumph. Benjamin Ivry, Barnes & Noble
