About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Rapper Boots Riley of the Coup and guitarist Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine followed up their debut as Street Sweeper Social Club with The Ghetto Blaster EP. Acting as an extension of the funk-metal and hip-hop shouts of the year prior, its seven songs sound like they could have come from the same session as Street Sweeper Social Club. Over RATM riffs, Boots continues to urge listeners to throw their lighters up, occasionally breaking free from the hype-man role to deliver tongue-in-cheek messages about what it's like to be a revolutionary in 2010 ("'The New Fuck You'") and tips on how to beat the system when you're broke ("'Scars'"). However, most of The Ghetto Blaster EP is about rockin' -- lyrically and musically. Planned as a precursor to summer festival dates on Rock the Bells and the Vans Warped Tour, "'Everythang'" and "'Ghetto Blaster'" are knowingly party-centric. Similarly, renditions of LL Cool J's "'Mama Said Knock You Out'" and M.I.A.'s "'Paper Planes'" (complete with Morello scraping his string-nut to make a "make money" cash register sound) seem made for the sole purpose of riling up an arena crowd. Prediction: a live album is imminent. Jason Lymangrover, All Music Guide
