February 05, 2005: I knew I was destined to love Gil Shaham as soon as I saw this CD, and I knew that I did love him as soon as I heard his "Largo al Factotum!" What a clever arrangement!...Figaro's opening aria was one of my very first operatic experiences, and to this day I still feel quivery excited shivers down my back when I hear the baritone start his "lar-a-la-la-la's!" What fun it must be to play it! Amongst the other pieces on the CD there is Gluck’s “Dance of The Blessed Spirits,” of course, and a lovely fantasy on “The Magic Flute.” The sparkling "Carmen" fantasy is flawlessly performed (though no one can hold a candle to Perlman’s version of the Sarasate Fantasy), and Heifetz's famous "Porgy and Bess" arrangements (upon hearing which, I up and ordered the sheet music straightaway). People who enjoy this CD, I am sure, have the same sentiment as I: we ADORE hearing the arias sung, but while we hear 'em we're itching to play them ourselves!
