Editorial Reviews

Though traditionally the realm of good ol' boy rock bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, drag racing's speed and drama have plenty in common with hip-hop's frenetic beats, rhymes, and revved-up machismo. Proving that point is the R&B-and rap-laced soundtrack for The Fast and the Furious, a flick loosely based on an article from Vibe magazine about L.A. gangs who race stolen and remodeled cars. Seventeen cuts deep, the disc buzzes with rah-rah thug boasts ("POV City Anthem" by Cadillac Tah), assorted nihilistic hardcore rhymes (Scarface's "Suicide"), and party-crunkin' feel-good jams ("Good Life Remix" featuring Faith Evans). At times, the soundtrack's speedy pace makes it whiz by like too much greased lightning. But with pit stops like the Prince-informed drumbeats of Ashanti's "When a Man Does Wrong," the sensitive-man swooning of R. Kelly on "Take My Time Tonight," and Vita's remake of Madonna's "Justify My Love," the disc's high-octane hip-hop is balanced with just enough belt buckle-polishing slow jams to prevent listeners from getting whiplash.
