Editorial Reviews

There are few things more satisfying than hearing a gospel singer find the church-rooted melodies bubbling just beneath the Top 40 surface of a pop tune. When that singer is the formidable Yolanda Adams and the pop song is R. Kelly's soaring "I Believe I Can Fly," it's a doubly delicious treat. Adams kicks The Experience, with an uplifting studio version of Kelly's power ballad that gets extra liftoff from guest vocals by Gerald Levert. The remainder of the disc features Adams performing live and offers a mix of fast-moving modern hymns ("Continual Praise"), poignant ballads ("Open My Heart"), and breezy, praise-inspiring, mid-tempo songs ("Already Alright"). Not content with a conservative approach to gospel music, Adams forays into Afro-Brazilian fusion on the catchy "Ye of Little Faith." Thematically, as she did on her Grammy Award-winning Mountain High Valley Low, Adams connects her deep spirituality to larger social concerns. "What About the Children" stresses our children's need for responsible role models. As a vocalist, Adams -- whose intonations sound as if they were culled from the best of '70s and '80s soul -- is not as in-your-face as other contemporary gospel proselytizers. Yet, her mission to spread God's message of love and hope is every bit as urgent. Tony Green Barnes & Noble

May 25, 2006: For anyone who has experience the ministry of Yolanda Adams then you probably can attest to everything that I am about to say! If you have not, then I suggest that you just continue reading. First of all, I appreciate the production of this cd! For a live project, the sound and the music is tight! The background singers are singing and have a nice blend. Often times with a live project, you tend to get either too much music, too much of the soloist, too much of the background singers and not enough of something...you don't get that with this project. It's a nice balance of all three! The songs you may have heard before but not quite like this! You may think you shouldn't get it because they are remixes or you've heard them before..don't make that mistake! Yolanda presents these songs in such a way that it doesn't take away from the original version but it's been refreshened for enjoyment, for encouragement and for enlightment. Yolanda opens with the duet with Gerald Levert that is a nice arrangement with strings! The Live Experience kicks off with a bang with the rockin' "Already Alright" that nicely flows into "Continual Praise". Yolanda squashes these two songs nicely! You may not have time to notice because you'll be too busy bobbing along with her. Then comes the wonderful tender ballads of "Fragile Heart" and "What About the Children". Yolanda ever so sweetly sings both of these until "....the children" actually tugs at your heart and causes you to wanna help any child that you see out of anything. She goes back and pulls up the latin flavored "Ye of Little Faith". This was a nice surprise and flows nicely with the Experience! Yolanda adequately delivers this song and you'll wind up doing the salsa or the mambo in your living room! Then she does her mega-hit "Open My Heart" with a live twist! She sings this song with such an intensity that you have no other choice but to respond somehow. Whether meditation on the Words, tears, vocal expression...somehow this song draws a response from you. As she leaves that song, she nicely flows into "That Name" where God's presence just manifested itself and then she moves into "In the Midst of It All" where God's manifested presence just heightens! It this song where Yolanda let's her hair down and let us know exactly who she's singing for, why she's singing for him and exactly how much she loves him!!!! As she said, she loves her mother and she has a wonderful husband but when she needs a Saviour, it's all about Jesus! That's what this cd is about...Jesus! She then moves to her two closing numbers...the rousing "Yeah". The band is just playing out of this world and she has you clapping and dancing on your feet before she just melts your heart with her uplifting, inspirational closure of the live performance of "I Believe I Can Fly". Now I do appreciate the talents of Gerald Levert however, I prefer the live version. Yolanda ministers this as only she can and it really lifts your heart to know that you can do whatever it is you set your mind too! My friend, grab the Experience! It really is an Experience that you need to have! It will touch your emotions and cause you to touch God! It's also just plain good music! I was at the concert and I remember the anointing being presence very strongly...I remember the folks crying, waving their hands, rejoicing and standing in awe as...
