About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Queens of the Stone Age mainman Josh Homme has so often tapped into the veins of weirdness that crisscross the California desert, one might think he'd have drained it dry. But as proved by this outing, perhaps the most out-there of his Desert Sessions so far, the guy evidently mans his own bottomless pit of oddity. While as thick with blissfully stoned guitar rock as ever, Volume 9/10 finds Homme and company soaring off on some intriguing side trips -- like the reed- and brass-dominated "Dead in Love," which sounds like a mad scientist's hybrid of Nick Cave's Bad Seeds and Love circa Forever Changes. "Holey Dime" is similarly off-the-beaten-path, with a deceptively gentle acoustic intro that gives way, without a moment's warning, to eye-opening tribal percussion. The revolving crew of guests continues to grow -- like a bizarro-world version of the Will the Circle Be Unbroken crew -- with contributions as varied as those of Dean Ween (who helps turn "Subcutaneous Phat" into a Prince-meets-Hee Haw hoedown) and Twiggy Ramirez (the driving force behind the thunderous "Covered in Punks Blood"). The most interesting presence, however, is that of Polly Harvey, who vamps sensually on "A Girl like Me" and mixes it up, à la Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood, with Chris Goss on the smoky "There Will Never Be a Better Time." Maybe it's something in the water -- or lack thereof -- or maybe it's something in the recesses of Homme's mind, but the desert has never seemed more fertile. David Sprague, Barnes & Noble
