About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

The Definitive Collection is a fabulous double-disc assembly of the Alan Parsons Project's singles that includes the band's strongest material up to 1996. All the songs are presented chronologically, and the information inside discusses each source album with great detail and offers extensive crediting for each individual track. Some obvious appearances include "The Raven," "Games People Play," "Eye in the Sky," "Don't Answer Me," and "Pyramania." What makes this set such a treasure is the inclusion of songs that fail to surface on other compilations, like "Snake Eyes" from Turn of a Friendly Card, "Too Late" from the overlooked Gaudi album, or the eerie "Doctor Tarr and Professor Feather" from Tales of Mystery and Imagination. A good number of instrumentals are welcomed throughout the CDs as well, such as "I Robot," "Voyager," "Sirius," and "Mammagamma." Two of the better tracks from 1993's Try Anything Once album appear here also, in "Turn It Up" and "Re-Jigue." Fans of the Alan Parsons Project will wonder why such gems as "Lucifer," "Winding Me Up," or "You Lie Down With Dogs" fail to appear, but after an overview of the selections it's obvious they've been bumped for more commercial songs, which still doesn't hinder this collection. The Definitive Collection is about as precise as a hits package can be from this band, short of a box set. The sound is pristine, and the cover and packaging are apropos to the band's style and music. This absolute collection lets the listener combine all of the ideas and concepts of Parsons into almost two hours of music, as each song aptly signifies his brilliant career as both musician and engineer. Almost "Definitive"...But...by RockRevolutionary

August 10, 2009: When I first purchased this compilation from Barnes & Noble I was hoping that it would have all tracks as it's listed here. But guess what?! I got the CD in the mail today & looked at all the tracks only to find that both "(The System of) Doctor Tarr & Professor Fether" & "The Raven" from the Project's debut LP "Tales of Mystery & Imagination" are not included on the copy (that I purchased from BN) of this collection of hits. How disappointing?!! BN should've noted that beforehand b/c its version doesn't have these 2 earlier songs from the group (at least mine didn't) which ulitmately fooled me. Why is really beyond me. I was kind of hoping that I wouldn't have to shell out more money to purchase these songs individually which appears I'll have no choice but to do it since they aren't my on copy of this CD collection. But that's my only gripe about this CD. The laser sound quality is still superb. It's still as definitive as any Parsons compilation gets. Most of the biggest hits are on the CD such as "Sirius/Eye In The Sky", "Games People Play", "Time", "I Robot/I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You", "Don't Let It Show", "Voyager/What Goes Up", "Damned If I Do", "Don't Answer Me" & AOR radio staple "Breakdown" are all here. Just like any "definitive" collection of songs on CD not every song these guys have released is present ("Doctor Tarr & Prof. Fether", being the Project's first ever Top 40 single, is the most glaring example.) But hey, nobody's perfect. The compilation is still worth every penny & I highly recommend it to anyone that is into progressive art-rock, even all the Coldplay fans out there.

I Also Recommend: Come Sail Away: The Styx Anthology, Gold, Retrospectacle: The Supertramp Anthology, Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd, Platinum Collection.
