About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Few artists were more ubiquitous during the '80s than multiple-Grammy winner Lionel Richie. It's hard to think of another pop star from that time or since who could write and sing both earnest, two-tissue ballads such as "Hello" and "Truly" and gleefully danceable ditties such as "Dancing on the Ceiling" and "All Night Long." Richie's talent is that singular, so it's fitting that the charismatic performer, who fronted the Commodores in the '70s, would get his props with The Definitive Collection -- a more comprehensive package than 1992's 14-song greatest-hits compilation, Back to Front. On this essential collection, which spotlights the hit maker's early-'80s peak, Richie offers fans 18 of his best-loved songs, including the aforementioned "Hello" from 1983's Grammy Album of the Year, Can't Slow Down, and his wedding-staple duet with Diana Ross, "Endless Love," as well as five of his biggest songs with the Commodores, including "Easy" and "Three Times a Lady." After a conspicuous absence from the spotlight during the late '80s, Richie made a tepid comeback in the '90s, which garnered the R&B hit "Do It to Me," and later scored with the club favorite "Angel," from his 2002 comeback disc, Renaissance; both songs are included here. Richie proves he hasn't lost his Midas touch or his pleasing pipes with two new songs: the country-tinged "To Love a Woman," featuring Enrique Iglesias, and the soon-to-be classic ballad "Goodbye." For diehard Richie fans and nostalgic '80s pop culturists alike, this is indeed a Definitive Collection. Tracy E. Hopkins, Barnes & Noble

July 22, 2004: While I do enjoy a good Lionel Richie song here and there, I can honsetly say that this album struck me as odd. I bought it on my way home from my movie night with friends, and when I started listening to it, there was an all-too-familiar feeling about the songs. Then it occurred to me- YOU ALREADY SANG THESE SONGS ON OTHER ALBUMS!!! What did you forget you already used these ones, or what?! I mean, come on Lionel, I expected more out of you. "Hello", "Do it to me one more time", "Dancing on the ceiling", "Running with the night"- these were all hits for you, man!! You think you're fooling anyone?! They even used your song, "Endless Love" in the movie, "Happy Gilmore". What the hell, G? I take this is a blatant disrespect for your fans. It's taking the easy way out, just so you can try and fool us into giving you more money. I'm sorry, mister, but I don't want others to make the same mistake I did. So if you have never heard these songs before, it is a great album, but if you have heard them, don't buy it. It simply repeats itself.

April 18, 2004: This album stays true to its title, as it is the definitve collection of Lionel Richie's greatest hits, from "Hello" to "Dancing On The Ceiling" to my 2 personal favorites, "Do It To Me" and the timeless Diana Ross duet "Endless Love". Also included are five Commodores classics, including "Easy" and "Three Times A Lady". An added bonus: two new tracks that show Lionel hasn't lost his magic touch: the country - tinged Enrique Inglesias duet "To Love A Woman" and the hauntingly beautiful "Goodbye". A must for music fans.
