The third volume in Collectables' summation of the Modernaires' period on Columbia covers just over a year in the group's time between two high-profile gigs: with the Glenn Miller Orchestra on a parade of mid-'40s hits, and serving Frank Sinatra in a similar capacity (though with far fewer hits). Just under half of the 19 titles feature the Modernaires backing a solo artist; Doris Day's "Thoughtless" is by far the best, followed by her other appearance with the group, "It's a Quiet Town (In Crossbone County)." Despite few hits and nothing special on the other guest spots (for Bob Crosby and Buddy Clark), it's clear the Modernaires were still capable of excelling on their own: a version of "Ain't Misbehavin'" is predictably smooth and breezy, but also captures the laid-back exuberance of Fats Waller himself.
