About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Alanis Morissette has been pushing people's buttons for the better part of a decade, but more important, she's been pushing herself in unique musical directions -- a combination that's made her one of the most enduring singer-songwriters of her generation. This 19-track retrospective retraces virtually all the steps that Alanis has made over the years, ranging from the angry-young-woman fist-shaking of such early hits as "You Oughta Know" to the almost hymnlike pensiveness of "That I Would Be Good." Naturally, the disc spends plenty of time on the singer's chart hits, but there's also a nice sampling of material that might have otherwise slipped under the radar -- from "Mercy," her elegiac contribution to Jonathan Elias's sweeping Prayer Cycle to a suitably sassy take on Cole Porter's "Let's Do It" (culled from the soundtrack to De-Lovely). The Collection only offers up one newly recorded tune -- a burnished take on Seal's "Crazy" -- but there's enough diversity in its grooves to make it a perfect one-stop for Alanis fans. January 11, 2009: I always looked past Alanis during her early work and wasn't that into her music. Years later I heard a song that I just loved after it got to the first chorous. That song was called Crazy a cover of the original song sung by Seal. Since then I looked into her work and some of her songs on the collection are now my favorites. Especially her most current album Flavors of Entanglement is just fantastic. Her songs have a good beat and rhythm to it including some very thoughtful songwriting on her part. If you are starting out as a fan then to me you should get this collection first so you'll get an idea of some of the songs that are pretty good. Some of the songs that I really like and recommend on this album are thank you, everything, crazy, ironic, and hands clean. Hear this album out for yourself and see what song you might like. This is sort of off topic but she was just adorable in the film Dogma. All in all she is one hell of a songwriter and singer and I totally recommend this collection of memorable songs by the wonderful Alanis Morissette.

I Also Recommend: Flavors of Entanglement.
