About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Beginning in 1955, Chuck Berry served up a distinctive blend of blues, R&B, and country and western seasoned with a unique lyrical sense, and -- sorry, Elvis -- virtually defined the sound and vocabulary of early rock 'n' roll. Berry's signature guitar sound of double-stop phrasing was influenced by bluesman T-Bone Walker and Louis Jordan guitarist Carl Hogan. But Berry's unprecedented command of language -- his ability to write clever lyrics that utilized meter and rhythm -- owed little to anyone. THE CHESS BOX includes 71 tracks (six previously unreleased) on three CDs, featuring classic Chess recordings of "Maybellene," "Roll Over Beethoven," "Johnny B. Goode," and others. Also included is a healthy sampling of Berry's blues, including "Wee Wee Hours" (the B-side of "Maybellene"), the rarely heard '70s original, "Have Mercy Judge," and Guitar Slim's "The Things I Used to Do." Whether you're heading for outer space, a desert island, or a party on the patio, you must take some of his stuff with you. Bryan Powell, Barnes & Noble
