About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

This three-disc box set is what Dylanphiles have been waiting for, sitting patiently for years, even decades. And, even after its 1991 release, it retains the feeling of being a special, shared secret among the hardcore, since -- no matter the acclaim -- it's the kind of record that only the hardcore will seek out. Of course, the great irony is that even casual Dylan fans will find much to treasure in this three-disc set of unreleased material. They'll find songs as good as anything that made the records (sometimes surpassing the official releases, especially on the last disc), plus alternate versions (including original versions of songs on Blood on the Tracks) and long-fabled songs, from the incomplete "She's Your Lover Now" to songs cut from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. This doesn't just function as an alternate history of Dylan, but as an expansion of Dylan's history, enriching what is already known about the greatest songwriter of his era -- after all, every song here would qualify as the best song on anybody else's album. And that's no exaggeration. Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

April 16, 2007: You don't get paid writing these reviews, but you can at least review what you want. I never tire writing about Bob Dylan, Larry Norman, Malcolm Muggeridge, Steve Scott, and a few other writers and musicians. Someone else can handle discs one and two of this set. I'm mesmerized by disc three. These are the outtakes that never made Infidels, or for that matter, Slow Train, Saved, or Shot of Love. They did make Empire Burlesque, where they were ruined by Arthur Baker. But here are alt versions of "Tight Connection to My Heart" "here called "Someone's Got a Hold of My Heart" and "When the Night Comes Falling From the Sky". You not only hear dazzling alt lyrics, but Dylan in progress writing them, as in the latter song, with the lines "You'll know everything I know, down below and up above. The alt line has love instead of know, and here Bob obviously gets it wrong, since in one version, love rhymes with above, in the other know rhymes with below. This track has a line from each version. Great things like that, not to mention dazzling wordplay in "Angelina" and "Foot of Pride." "Ye Shall Be Changed" and "You Changed My Life" are upbeat, Saved- era keepers that never made the cut. Not to mention the songs everyone loves, like "Every Grain of Sand" and "Blind Willie McTell". Bob at his unheard best.

February 20, 2005: Here are a few thoughts on the Bootleg Series. Disc 1 is comprised of acoustic numbers that have more energy than the classic Dylan songs from that period often heard on radio. Check out Rambling, Gambling Willie and House Carpenter. Disc 2 chronicles the switch from acoustic to electric and continues up to Blood on the Tracks. The mid 60s numbers are mostly good. The alternate take of It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry is excellent. The two Basement Tapes numbers and Tangled Up in Blue are poorly recorded. Disc 3 continues to 1989 and is full of lost treasures like Seven Days, Blind Willie McTell, and Foot of Pride. Some of Dylan’s best 80s work is on this disc. This is a good companion to the Biograph box set.
