Country star Lynn Anderson rolls through 13 bluegrassy tunes on her 2004 CD The Bluegrass Sessions, featuring a handful of originals and a rootsy re-recording of her huge hit "Rose Garden." Highlights include a nice retelling of John Prine's "Paradise" and Anderson's own "If I Kiss You," both of which use a subdued tempo and a relaxed delivery (and both of which sound closer to her more countrypolitan roots). Unfortunately, while revamping familiar pop songs like "Stairway to Heaven" and Blackfoot's "Train, Train" worked well for Dolly Parton on her bluegrass albums, Anderson's version of the Drifters' "Under the Boardwalk" sounds a little forced, and while Dolly's recent roots revival seems honest and heartfelt, one can't help but wonder if Anderson saw her successes and figured "I could do that!" Longtime fans of Anderson's career will probably be satisfied with this release, but those looking for the next "Little Sparrow" should probably keep looking.
