While the Mediaeval Baebes may have approached their pious subject matter with a far lighter touch than contemporaries like Anonymous Four, their semi-whimsical, slightly sexualized treatment of early music was no less riveting (or relaxing). Formed out of the ashes of classical goth rock outfit Miranda Sex Garden, the 12-piece vocal group mined material from all over the map, from the religiously dogmatic to the downright pagan. Best of the Mediaeval Baebes collects 20 tracks from the group's first five studio albums, including "Gaudete," "Coventry Carol," "Ecce Mundi Gaudium," and "Now Springes the Spray."
