Chrysalis Records handled the band's non-Australia/New Zealand releases from 1976-1977 -- an extremely low point in terms of sales. Not surprisingly, Best of Split Enz focuses a little too heavily on this early period to truly give the casual listener a representative collection of the band's better-known period. The big A&M/new wave-era hits ("I Got You," "One Step Ahead") are covered adequately, but this was clearly an attempt to cash in on Crowded House's success in Europe the year before. Even if there's no problem with the material here, History Never Repeats focuses more clearly on the band's most popular period. Chris Woodstra, All Music Guide
