The Best of Kirsty MacColl is a scaled-down version of the triple-disc From Croydon to Cuba: An Anthology, which plunges deep enough to include obscurities and late demos. This disc is but an introduction to a brilliant career full of highlights that cannot be contained on one disc. However, it's a very proper introduction, one that updates 1995's Galore by including top-shelf material ("England 2, Columbia 0," "In These Shoes") from 2001's Tropical Brainstorm. All of MacColl's well-known and extremely varied songs are here, including "They Don't Know," "A New England," "Fairytale of New York" (with the Pogues), and "Walking Down Madison."
