About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Intended as a companion piece to the anthem-laden Best of 1980–1990, this new collection of U2 nuggets is considerably duskier around the edges, but perhaps more illuminating in the end. It spans the Irish rockers' biggest and best '90s hits, including "Even Better than the Real Thing," "Beautiful Day," "One," and "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of." But the primary draw for Bono-philes is the two new tunes that round out the compilation, both of which are undeniably up to the band's highest standards. "The Hands That Built America" recaptures a good bit of the grandeur of U2's halcyon banner-waving days with a mix of nostalgia and intensity that seems like a good harbinger for Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York, for which it serves as theme music. (The other previously unreleased gem is "Electrical Storm.") The disc is punctuated with other cinematic offerings, such as the theme from Wim Wenders's Until the End of the World and "Stay," which accompanied the same director's Faraway, So Close. Even in looking back, the band display a pervasive restlessness, offering up remixed -- not radically, but noticeably -- versions of "Discotheque" and "Staring at the Sun," both of which are somewhat more organic sounding than the originals. The limited-edition pressing adds a second disc that's largely given over to remixes, including a harsh, in-your face "Gun Mix" of "Happiness Is a Warm Gun" and a revamped "Solar Plexus Mix" of "Mysterious Ways" that boosts the bass to booty-shaking levels. It also brings together some hard-to-find B-sides, including the elegant, organ-laced "Your Blue Room" and the spare, percussive "North and South of the River." This special version also includes a DVD housing videos, director commentary, six bonus tracks, and The Road to Sarajevo, a documentary chronicling the band's 1997 visit to Bosnia. An indispensable document of U2's inspiring, thought-provoking path to the 21st century, Best of 1990–2000 captures these important rockers at the peak of their creative powers. January 18, 2003: Compared to the companion CD, "The Best Of 1980-1990," U2 traversed into another universe in the '90s. While the first best of collection was filled with classic rock songs that are some of the best recorded ever, U2's second Best of collection travels from rock to pop to dance to techno to opera! It is an exhilarating if somewhat jarring listen. Covering their recorded output from "Achtung Baby" to "All That You Can't Leave Behind," U2 shows they still have that early rock energy even though it sometimes got lost with mindless songs like "Numb." This collection is overall solid, however one might be tempted to call it a remix album, as the album (including the 2nd B-Sides disc) contains 15 songs remixed! Some of the song selections are questionable as well: why include poor tracks like "Numb," and leave off stronger tracks like "The Fly," "Please," or "Walk On?" One hugh highlight is the inclusion of two new tracks that are outstanding and better than some of the material here: "Electrical Storm," and "The Hands That Built America." In conclusion, if you are a U2 fan, there's no question you'll want this CD. The bonus DVD is short (about 20 minutes) and interesting, but outside of a superb live version of "Please" doesn't bear up well to repeated listenings.

December 08, 2002: A great overview of the biggest hits/singles from the 1990's, along with a couple of interesting remixes/remakes (whatever you call them), and two new songs that are fantastic, yet not at all alike. I am shocked that "The Fly" was not included, however, although I read an interview with Edge and Larry where they said they weren't sure it held up after all these years. I disagree, but it is their song after all! One last bone to pick: The second disc has entirely too many dance/techno/Eurotrash type mixes and reintrepretations. Really, if I cared about that sort of music, I probably would not have enough sense to love U2!
