I must confess that I stumbled onto this music while watching a French movie- (yes, a French movie!). It was the "Exit Music" track which really grabbed my attention. I thought for sure I recognized the playing, but when the credits rolled, I was mystified by the name of Brad Mehldau (I know- where have I been?). My journey of discovery for that song and others then began in earnest, and, after a little difficulty, I finally tracked down this particular album. In addition to "Exit" are some other wonderful compositions from that same movie, including "Song, Song." You'll notice hints of Chopin harmonic structures in the writing(Mehldau's classical training is certainly present), but it is distinct, innovative and contemporary. Additional selections include Mehldau's lyrical and tender interpretations of a few standards such as "Bewitched, Bothered . . . " and "For all We Know." Here again, while you sense the undeniable influence of Bill Evans, the approach is nonetheless fresh and original. At times, Mehldau wows you with flourishes of technique, but only for appropriate effect as the musical statements are uncluttered. Sometimes dark, other times light and dreamy- they seduce you with their wistful presence. Complementing Mehldau is the sensitive playing of bassist Larry Grenadier and attentive rhythm of drummer Jorge Rossy, both of whom are allowed space but more often contribute to making the ensemble sound like one instrument. Indeed, elegant and poignant, this is perhaps the best current example of what piano jazz trio can provide at its finest.
