Editorial Reviews

Giovanni Gabrieli's music gives the concept of "surround sound" a whole new meaning. Organist at St. Mark's in Venice in the late 16th century, he wrote many works with the special acoustics of this great cathedral in mind. Instrumental ensembles and vocal groups were placed in different parts of the edifice, and Gabrieli created a host of amazing echo effects that the listener would experience from all sides. He is most famous for his brass music, and when you hear this recording, you'll know why. The sonic splendor of these pieces is astonishing, even on a recording. Of course, when you've gathered brass players from America's top orchestras to let loose, should you expect anything less? Andrew Farach-Colton, Barnes & Noble
