Editorial Reviews

Nearly two and a half hours of music fills The #1 Soprano Album, a two-disc compilation of arias by Puccini, Verdi, Mozart, and other great composers, performed by many of the grande dames of the opera stage. Puccini’s "O mio babbino caro" starts things off, sung with enormous sensitivity by Renée Fleming, followed by Delibes’s famous "Flower Duet" with Joan Sutherland and Jane Berbié. Sumi Jo sails to the stratosphere in the Queen of the Night’s notoriously difficult Magic Flute aria, and Leontyne Price offers a memorably moving "Vissi d’arte" from Tosca. Marilyn Horne delivers Carmen’s "L’amour est un oiseau" with plenty of sultry swagger and also closes the program with a lovely version of the traditional American song "Shenandoah". Birgit Nilsson, Kiri Te Kanawa, Beverly Sills, and many other soprano stars offer arias by composers from Handel to Wagner to Strauss. It’s another entry in Decca’s top-selling series that also includes The #1 Tenor Album, The #1 Choral Album, and The #1 Opera Album. EJ Johnson, Barnes & Noble

September 28, 2007: I was on the fence about whether to buy a compilation album, but I am so glad I purchased this one. The recordings are top-quality: these are amazing performances in crystal-clear audio. Sumi Jo's rendition of the aria from The Magic Flute is exquisite.

March 03, 2005: This CD covers the basic soprano repertoire, with only the best singers. It is a perfect compilation, and just the thing to put on when you need some music just to enjoy. There are two disks of great singing so you get your money's worth. Whether you're a fanatic already or just starting to listen to opera, this is THE number one soprano album to buy.
