Editorial Reviews

Seekers of a good collection of soothing classical music have a wealth of choices available since every major label has contributed to the category of "chill-out" compilations. Among the most likely to please, Decca's The #1 Adagios Album offers a broad range of serene, contemplative music in a variety of styles, from the charming airs of the Baroque era to early twentieth century romanticism and impressionism. These peaceful instrumental selections are mostly taken from larger works -- concertos, string quartets, operas -- though there are a few pieces here that have become famous in their own right, outside their original contexts. Barber's Adagio and Mozart's Andante from the "Piano Concerto No. 21" were both used in film scores and may be the most recognizable tracks for that exposure. To the extent that a collection intended as a quiet background for relaxation should hold no surprises, all the selections will be comfortably familiar to most listeners, or at least sound pleasant and unobtrusive. The performances are smooth and of sustained high quality, and the performers are all top drawer. There is consistency of tone and polish throughout this double-disc collection, yet the arrangement of the program is varied just enough to sustain casual interest. Blair Sanderson, All Music Guide
