About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Arhoolie's Texas Sharecropper & Songster is a recording made in 1960, during the blues revival. Prior to the blues revival, Mance Lipscomb was an unknown, and his discovery was one of the positive byproducts of the revival. He was a great country-blues man, and this is perhaps his greatest effort, capturing him running through a number of traditional songs. Most of the songs are augmented by his jackknife slide guitar, and all feature his raw, haunted vocals, which make these classic songs sound timeless. Thom Owens, All Music Guide

March 16, 2009: In my Anthro class, we were introduced to Mance Lipscomb's music. I loved it, and decided that I would buy the CD -- I listen to it semi-often, and it is a great combo of blues and folk, and something else I can't put my finger on -- it creates its own unique flair.

October 23, 2008: Mance Lipscomb's Texas Sharecropper & Songster is a recording made in 1960 during the 60's blues revival. Prior to this, Mance was an unknown artist living in his hometown of Navasota, TX. He was known as the Texas Songster because he could play all types of music from blues, ballads, folk songs, popular songs of the day and dance numbers. Check out Mance's other albums too. Essential listening for all fans of acoustic blues.
