To play on Donny & Marie's famous quip, Dana Glover is a little bit slick pop and a little bit rock 'n' roll, and Testimony, her full-length debut, showcases both sides of that split personality with equal élan. While her name may not yet be familiar to most listeners, her lithe voice likely is -- thanks to teasers such as "It Is You (I Have Loved)," which appeared on the Shrek soundtrack. Here, Glover acquits herself nicely not only as a singer -- she pulls out all the stops on emotive tunes like "Thinking Over" (which boasts orchestral arrangements by Paul Buckmaster, who did the strings on Train's "Drops of Jupiter") -- but also as a pianist and lyricist. The latter talent shines through (no pun intended) "Rain," a yearning tune that sees the protagonist questioning, well, just about everything about her existence. The North Carolina native worked closely with Robbie Robertson on Testimony, and he adds a goodly dose of the Band's burnished charm to songs like the slow-burning soul stirrer "Make It Real" and the gospel-tinged title track. Although she once earned her living as a fashion model, it's clear that Dana Glover is more than just another pretty face. David Sprague, Barnes & Noble
