About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

In the six years since he released his last studio album, 1996's Dance into the Light, Phil Collins has worn a number of different hats, including big-band leader (on A Hot Night in Paris) and Disney composer, a gig that that earned him Oscar, Grammy, and Golden Globe trophies to add to an already crowded mantel. Add to this a third marriage and recent fatherhood, and you have the inspiration for a seventh studio album packed with highly personalized pop. Teaming with Green Day and Alanis Morissette producer Rob Cavallo, Collins favors a sleek, subdued sound that finds him daubing the yearning "This Love This Heart" and the equally lovelorn "Swing Low" with ethereal keyboards and stately, occasionally splashy rhythms. Other low-key highlights that are an obvious nod to these major life changes are "Come with Me" -- a touching pledge of protection from father to child set atop soothing synths and rendered by Collins in an emotive, reassuring tone -- and the aching, modestly rocking title track, an expression of unfettered devotion bolstered by a beefy electric guitar line and a gospel-tinged choir. The biggest highlights, however, are a bright, shiny interpretation of Billy Nicholls's buoyant "Can't Stop Loving You" (a hit for Leo Sayer in 1978) and "Don't Get Me Started," which boasts crisp harmonies and arrangements reminiscent of late-'80s Genesis. Testify finds Phil Collins confirming his commitment to family and to fans of sophisticated adult pop alike. Dave Gil de Rubio, Barnes & Noble

July 02, 2003: Many people think of this album as a totally different musical experience than his others, and therefore it's bad? i think it's great he is able to write whats in his heart and while it has a fresh sound, it's still Phil Collins. The focus is on Can't Stop Loving You, but i think the best song on the album is the Title track, next up: Don't Get Me Started which has kind of a hint of the social commentary that Peter Gabriel's BIKO had years earlier. Among other fine songs are Driving Me Crazy, Wake Up Call (yes the song from that Toyota commercial), Come With Me & You Touch My Heart. I rank this album with the likes of "No Jacket Required" & "Face Value", not neccesarily it's content, but for it's quality. I think the song "Testify" is HITS material

January 29, 2003: I've been a Phil and Genesis fan for many years. After the departure on Dance Into The Light from his signature sound, I was worried that this CD might go even further in that direction. At first listen, I was disappointed. Some of the tracks have a more "synthesized" sound, and the heavy drums that I've come to expect from Phil's albums were not as obvious. But after several more plays through the entire CD, I must say that at each listen I hear new elements that I like more and more. Songs that initially disappointed now seem fresh -- and some sound more like classic Phil than they did initially. I still would have preferred a bit heavier drumming on some of the tracks, and I think I would have preferred if more of the tracks were "rockier", instead of more melodic. Overall, I enjoy the album now as it has definitely grown on me after several listenings. I'd still recommend it to Phil fans.
