Since her hit-making run as one-half of the Judds, Wynonna has taken punches from the country establishment for making rock-oriented solo albums like her sophomore release, Tell Me Why. Hard to see what the fuss is about, because Tell Me Why is a fiery collection that grabs the listener by the ears and never lets go. Karla Bonoff's title tune shows Wynonna's vocal range on some totally infectious folk rock. "Rock Bottom" sports a swampy gospel groove brought to life by her trademark growl, and Mary Chapin Carpenter's wry "Girls with Guitars" is a stomping feminist anthem. But there's more to Wynonna than shouting. "Only Love" proves she can still croon like she used to do with her mama, and "Is It Over Yet" reveals she can still light up a torch song. Tell Me Why showcases not only an amazing voice but also one of the feistiest attitudes in country music. Bob Cannon, Barnes & Noble
