Reinhard Goebel and the ensemble Musica Antiqua Köln have done more than almost any others to revive interest in Georg Philipp Telemann, whose music used to be deemed stolid, by-the-numbers Baroque. No longer. Goebel's several recordings of the German master's works have shown how full of vigor and invention they can sound in the right hands, and here, Goebel extends his run to include a selection of the "flute" quartets, three- and four-movement works for a trio of melody instruments with continuo, which, contrary to the title, may or may not include a flute. No matter. It's an excellent choice of repertoire. These scores have been judged the composer's "most original contribution to the history of chamber music" in the The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. And in keeping with such high praise, the disc offers performances full of sparkle and spirit, with Goebel and his top-notch band displaying their customary blend of liveliness and precision. Baroque enthusiasts won't want to miss this one. EJ Johnson, Barnes & Noble
