About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

While it was probably daunting for this young British singer-songwriter to escape the shadow of his legendary dad, Richard Thompson, the odd shape -- and constant fluctuation -- of said shadow probably made the dodging a bit easier. As evidenced by his full-length debut, Teddy Thompson doesn't go out of his way to avoid his familial legacy -- Dad's right here, in fact, lending crisp guitar lines to several songs. The younger Thompson doesn't, however, endeavor to carry the folk torch into the new millennium, preferring to wax lovelorn but cynical à la Matthew Sweet on sharp, ringing tunes such as "Brink of Love" and "All We Said." There's an unfussy feel to Teddy's homey voice, which provides a nice contrast to arrangements that are, at times, a bit too pristine to fully complement the desired feel of spare, Crowded House-styled cuts such as "Love Her for That" and "Thanks a Lot." One of the album's better cuts, "Missing Children" -- which features guest vocals by Rufus Wainwright -- steers clear of romantic subtext, instead casting an offbeat glance at the possible plights of youths depicted on milk cartons nationwide. Call it a promising, if sometimes tentative, debut. David Sprague, Barnes & Noble

June 20, 2008: Love this CD and all his CDS. Met him a few times and he's very charming. "Wake up" has gotten me through many a day day. His voice is just so sincere.
