Editorial Reviews

The last time Disney hired a mainstream pop star to pen tunes for an animated jungle-themed blockbuster, the result was Elton John’s mega-selling soundtrack to "The Lion King." Here, Phil Collins does the honors, and his zestful, African-spiced songs make TARZAN one of the more listenable Disney soundtracks in recent memory. Fans of the diminutive Brit will kvell over Collins' double versions of nearly every tune, including a vocal-percussion number, "Trashin' the Camp," performed with monster boy band 'N Sync; actress Glenn Close, as the apeman's adoptive gorilla mom, is sweetly nurturing in her lullaby duet with Collins, "You'll Be in My Heart." Also included here is the always-engaging composer Mark Mancina's graceful, evocative instrumental score. Moira McCormick, Barnes & Noble
