Editorial Reviews

Young musicians don't get many breaks, and some don't get any at breaks at all. Talent, no matter how astonishing, is not enough; one must be lucky, too. There seem to be three ways one can make it to the big time: winning a major competition (as Van Cliburn did), being discovered by a powerful older colleague (as Anne-Sophie Mutter was), or filling in for an indisposed performer at a high-profile event (as Leonard Bernstein did). Chinese-born pianist Lang Lang is certainly an astonishing talent, but we might never had heard of him had he not been tapped to fill in on two days' notice for André Watts at an important gala concert in Chicago back in 1999. Lang Lang, then just 17 years old, immediately became the talk of the classical music world, and big-name conductors vied for the chance to present him to their audiences. The folks at Telarc Records cleverly signed him to an exclusive recording contract, and this is his debut CD. Recorded live at Tanglewood in August 2000, this wide-ranging solo recital shows what all the fuss is about. It goes without saying that Lang Lang is blessed with a phenomenal technique, heard to best effect here in Balakirev's Islamey, a tour de force of repeated notes, wild leaps, and exotic colors. Not only does this pianist negotiate the trickiest passages with apparent ease; he seems to be having the time of his life, too. Indeed, joyfulness is the most striking aspect of Lang Lang's playing. Whether he's tracing the svelte, elegant figure of a Haydn sonata, riding the passionate waves of Rachmaninov's Second Sonata, or searching the profound depths of Brahms's Op. 118, every phrase makes clear that Lang Lang loves playing the piano. One could quibble with interpretive details here and there, but there's no arguing about his ability to make the music come alive. Everything seems to be in place for a major -- and I mean major -- career: Lang Lang has taste, charm, charisma, and a big, beautiful sound. Most important of all, he has the ability to communicate, to share his love of the music with the listener. Horowitz and Rubinstein had that knack, and Lang Lang seems set to follow in their footsteps. Andrew Farach-Colton, Barnes & Noble
