Editorial Reviews

Silversun Pickups hold Smashing Pumpkins as close to their heart as, say, Mudhoney hold the Stooges -- perhaps even more, as Silversun Pickups (whose very initials are the same as the Pumpkins) act as though nothing happened between Siamese Dream in 1993 and Swoon in 2009. Try as they may, the bandmembers cannot deny the passage of time, or their geography, for Silversun Pickups are creatures of their time and place, just as their idols were. At their core, the Pumpkins were Midwestern misfits, something that was evident in their very appearance and sound. In contrast, Silversun Pickups shimmer sweetly on the surface, a sound suited for Los Angeles. Silversun Pickups avoid unpleasantness on Swoon, wallowing in washes of sound derived equally from guitars and whispered vocals and glimmering in the sunlight. It's pleasant enough, particularly when the breathy vocals fade away to leave behind cascades of guitars, but still remains an approximation of Smashing Pumpkins at their peak. July 07, 2009: My first listen to the SS Pickups was at the Barnes and Noble store wearing the headphones. I was just looking for something fresh to listen to. What I found in Swoon was a driving beat on drums and bass that was fast on most songs. I pretty much liked all the songs, but especially the first five songs. The most pop tune would be "It's Nice to Know You Work Alone." I liked the lyrics in the song "The Royal We"..."we are ready for the siege, we are armed to the teeth." My favorite song is "panic switch" because of the excellent drumming. I have no idea who are the members of Silversun Pickups, the lead vocalist fooled me into thinking it was a female rocker, but if that's so, she's one with a beard. The group should have put their names somewhere next to their instruments, but whatever. I also enjoyed their video "Lazy Eye" when I browsed them on YouTube, but that tune isn't on this cd.

Being over fifty yrs. old, I've been disappointed in a lot of music recently. Don't really like heavy metal, but enjoy everything from country to hard rock from the fifties to the present.

I Also Recommend: Gold, Rock N Roll Jesus, Rockford, Lucy Woodward Is... Hot & Bothered [Barnes & Noble Exclusive], Unwritten.

May 23, 2009: I really enjoyed the last effort from California's Silversun Pickups (2006's Carnavas) and was very excited to learn that they were putting out a new record this year. Time passed and "Panic Switch" was released. I wasn't sold on it right away, and it wasn't until the album dropped that I realized why... Swoon is an album that is meant to be taken as a whole. It is so much more than the sum of its parts.

Swoon is a cinematic album, in that listening to it (I suggest doing so at a high volume much like My Bloody Valentine) is like listening to the soundtrack for a movie that does not exist. Each song flows into the next and would not be complete without the preceding and following track. It is much more atmospheric than Carnavas and has a slight haze to it that really puts some depth in each song.

This is a better album than Carnavas was, no doubt about it. If you liked just a few songs on Carnavas (or don't listen to albums from start to finish in the proper order), don't bother with Swoon. This is one that plays like a vinyl. You need to sit, or lay, down and let it sink in, track by track. It may take a few listens, but it is definately worth it.
