About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Suzy Bogguss has long had a unique way with a country song, but even hard-core Bogguss fans might be surprised by the pop-jazz sultriness of Sweet Danger. Co-producing with Jason Miles, whose credits include work with Miles Davis, Luther Vandross, and Sting, Bogguss has crafted a thoroughly engaging, ambitious, lush exercise in soothing seduction fueled by layers of synths, burbling keyboards, strings, and percussion. Drummer Chris Parker maintains an admirably subtle rhythm section, alternating T-Bon Wok and Will Lee on bass. The mood is strictly mellow, but the songs aren't soft lyrically -- Bogguss co-wrote most of the material, and she doesn't shy away from touchy subjects. Obsessive love is chronicled amid the jittery, samba-inflected rhythms of "Everything" ("I love you / I hate you / Need you can't wait to / Be with you so I can leave you again"); giving in to the passion is the lyrical conceit of the gently swaying heart-tugger "Sweet Danger"; the melancholy, torch-like ruminations of "It's Not Gonna Happen Today," so redolent of early Carly Simon, paint a bleak portrait of post-breakup inertia ("nothing gets done when I get this way"); soaring strings and an aching melody cushion a touching monologue to a deceased lover now "In Heaven." As easy as Sweet Danger is on the ear, it can do a number on your heart, if you let it get inside. Take a chance; it hurts good. David McGee, Barnes & Noble
