About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

New York's pride of Gypsy punks are led by the snarling lion Eugene Hütz -- singer, DJ, actor (Everything Is Illuminated), and all-around cultural provocateur. On Super Taranta!, Gogol Bordello show off everything that make them one of the city's most entertaining live acts: the frantic pacing, uproarious Eastern European rhythms, and the Iggy Pop-esque combination of wit and danger that Hütz brings to every new endeavor. Musically, Super Taranta! embraces some new sounds -- Italian folk music, flamenco, and dub figure in heavily -- but more remarkable is the consistency. After years of breakneck international touring and high-flying shows, Gogol Bordello can still crank out tuneful variations on punk rock and Gypsy dance music. "Wanderlust King" treats a Social Distortion-styled ode to the road to a couple of bottles of slivovitz; the band take twin slaps at American mores, "American Wedding" and "Tribal Connection" (which asks, "No can do this, no can do that / What the hell can you do, my friend, in this place you call your town?"); and the creepy "Zina-Maria" tells the story of exploited Eastern European girls with the help of burbling Slavic brass. Like his age-defying idol, Iggy Pop, Hütz shows no sign of slowing down on Super Taranta!. If anything, this is Gogol Bordello stronger, better, and faster -- now, that's Italian!
