Editorial Reviews

The apotheosis of the stand-alone jazz rhythm section in one of the most influential live jazz sessions ever recorded. In less than two years together, the Bill Evans Trio -- Evans on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass, Paul Motian on drums -- redefined the jazz piano trio. Rather than strictly keeping time andmarking harmonic changes as conventional drummers and bassists had, Motian and LaFaro moved from a supporting role to freely interact with Evans -- having, in effect a three-way musical conversation. By the time these sides were recorded on June 25, 1961, there was a hypnotic symbiosis between the three men that was shattered 10 days later when bassist Scott LaFaro perished in a car wreck at the age of 25. Fortunately, their last performances together were captured and resulted in two magnificent albums: SUNDAY AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD and WALTZ FOR DEBBY. Both are still available on CD, beefed up with worthwhile alternate takes. This disc gathers the best versions of 10 of the 12 different songs recorded, including Evans' standard "Waltz for Debby" and an exquisitely limpid version of Richard Rodgers' "My Romance."
