About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Captain Beyond's second album must have confused the diehards. Where their self-titled debut had upheld the basic progressive heavy rock blueprint of lengthy instrumental explorations, constant tempo changes, and opaque, yet cinematic lyrics, Sufficiently Breathless downplays them for a subtler, song-oriented production. The predominant mood is snappy and businesslike; no track runs over five and a half minutes. This newfound conciseness certainly benefited such heavy-rocking efforts as "Distant Sun," even as the band stuck to their diverse guns on the moody, acoustic title track and the sleek Latin funk rock of "Bright Blue Eyes" and "Everything's a Circle." The results were intelligent and self-assured, yet the band's never-ending bad luck again intervened when vocalist Rod Evans quit in late 1973, leaving the album adrift. The band would proffer a markedly different style on their return four years later, but anyone dismissing progressive heavy rock as an oxymoron should definitely check out this album first. September 29, 2002: The first time my friend and I listened to the first Captain Beyond album in the summer of 1972, it just about took our faces off! For their next album, ?Sufficiently Breathless? (1973), Bobby Caldwell was no longer with them. Marty Rodriguez replaced Caldwell on drums. Another percussionist and keyboards were also added. This is a much more mellow Captain Beyond. The shifting time signatures, the breathtaking execution and the mind-blowing energy of the first recording gave way to a more straightforward approach. This is still a very good album from an exceptional band. The music has a delectably cosmic groove that I find irresistible. I recommend this album highly. But remember folks: the first album is a MONSTER. Bobby Caldwell?s drumming alone will stupefy you. You won?t believe the energy the band produces. The arrangements are well thought out. The band has unbelievable finesse. They?re classy. They?re thrilling. They?ll blow your mind! If you want an enjoyable album, get ?Sufficiently Breathless.? If you want your face taken off, get the first album (simply entitled ?Captain Beyond.?) Cheers, Murray
