Editorial Reviews

Violinist Joe Venuti and guitarist Eddie Lang were among the most innovative and popular jazz musicians of the 1920s and early '30s. Often partnered in musical situations, either as a duo or as members of a larger group, these two string wizards revolutionized the role of their instruments in improvisational music. This eye-opening collection brings together choice examples of their brilliant work, and in doing so, also features many other significant jazz figures of the age. Wonderfully adaptable musicians who were equally at home playing jazz, pop, blues, or classical music, Venuti and Lang were studio stalwarts until the guitarist’s untimely death in 1932. They have never really received the credit they deserve, and this collection can only bring more attention to their extraordinary artistry. Steve Futterman, Barnes & Noble
