Pavel Sporcl gets points for coupling Strauss' infrequently recorded "Violin Concerto" with Korngold's more popular "Violin Concerto." He gets further points for bringing to the works his lean but sweet tone, agile but incisive technique, and energetic but not overdriven sense of rhythm. In spite of these virtues, Sporcl's performances lack distinction. The Strauss sounds generic and needs more dedication if it is to come across as more than an early work by a talented but unsteady young composer. The Korngold, though lovely, should be played with more passion and can't hold a candle to great performances like those of Gil Shaham and Renaud Capuçon, much less the classic performances by its dedicatee, Jascha Heifetz. Jirí Kout leads the Prague Symphony Orchestra in competent but uninspired accompaniments. Supraphon's live digital sound is clean, but antiseptic. Jim Leonard, All Music Guide
