About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

This Maine-bred post-mod folk-popster carved out a decidedly personal niche with his debut album, Australia, saturated with a blend of acoustic guitars and triggered tape loops. With Stop All the World Now, however, Day proves he's adept at playing with others -- an experiment he takes to greatest lengths on the lush "Numbness for Sound" and "Collide," both of which incorporate a 25-piece orchestra into swelling sonic waves. Day swaps his six-string for piano on "End of Our Days," adding a stately undertone to the wistful sentiments expressed in the tune; he sticks with the ivories for "Trouble in Here," which packs a little more muscle than many of Day's earlier tunes. Guitarist Jay Clifford -- best known for his work in Jump, Little Children -- injects some spring into the step of songs like "Perfect Time of Day," an uncharacteristically upbeat look at life from Day, who seems to have shed some of the uncertainty and angst that dominated his last disc. The title of this album aside, Howie Day has learned to come to terms with the outside world while retaining the innate quirkiness that drew fans his way in the first place -- and that's an impressive trick to pull off. April 10, 2005: I have been a fan of Howie Day's singing since my guitar teacher (and now my chamber ensemble teacher) showed us a DVD of one of his concerts almost two years ago. He was barely known at the time and I embraced any indie singer that I happen to come by. I knew I had to buy his CD. I first bought Australia, and was overjoyed with it. But when I finally received Stop all the World Now, his talent is finally getting even more polished and his songwriting is getting even more beautiful. When I finally heard him on the radio with "Collide", I knew he was finally making his way until the music industry. It's rare to find such talent in a world of music that is usually wish-washy garbage. I appreciate artists who write their lyrics and music, sing their music, and continue their work without the side of being famous getting to their head. I love all of the songs on the CD and frequently listen to them wheneven I'm writing. It's not as preachy as Bono (which is kind of nice after hearing Bono go on and on about how dismal Earth is), but his music has been related to that of U2, which is an excellent compliment from my standards (and mostly everyone elses). w00t for Howie Day! The only complaint I have is for those people that keep on whining about "Collide" being his only good song. Basically, whoever says that hasn't A). Seen him in concert or B). Are still new to the whole spectrum of Howie Day.
