Editorial Reviews

With her third disc, Stone Love, underrated soul singer Angie Stone may finally get her due. Stone's raspy pipes recall those of Gladys Knight, whom she sampled on the breakout hit "No More Rain (In This Cloud)" from her solo debut, Black Diamond. This time around, Stone -- who began her career with the female rap trio the Sequence and later fronted the smooth-jazz group Vertical Hold -- scores with the up-tempo single, "I Wanna Thank Ya," featuring rapper Snoop Dogg. Other highlights include "Stay for a While," a perfectly harmonized ballad with crooner Anthony Hamilton; the Michael Jackson–inspired "Lovers' Ghetto"; and the sassy sister anthem "That Kind of Love," featuring "Clean Up Woman" Betty Wright. Although Stone, who's worked with rocker Lenny Kravitz and neo-soul star D'Angelo (with whom she has a son), doesn't break much new ground, Stone Love is a solid, classic R&B–inspired effort.
