About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Once considered the most band-like of indie-rock bands, Pavement gradually morphed into a vehicle for frontman Stephen Malkmus -- creating the kind of tension that could only lead to the group's 2000 implosion. Well, it didn't take long for Malkmus to emerge, seemingly unscathed, from the band's wreckage, toting along a sound not all that far removed from Pavement's latter days. Oh sure, things are somewhat more linear here -- loping tunes like "Discretion Grove" and the indie-scene love parable "Jennifer and the Ess-Dog" chug straight ahead with the sort of easygoing vibe as, say, "Cut Your Hair" -- but the sonic shift is pretty gradual. Malkmus indulges his new wave jones a bit more than he has in the past (as on the cheesy but contagious "Phantasies") and plays things a bit straighter on pop forays like the Beatle-ish "Pink India." But even with some of the rougher edges buffed, he can still latch onto the gray matter with a barbed lyrical image -- like the Yul Brynner biography that weaves through "Jo Jo's Jacket" or the pirate fantasy of "The Hook." The most revealing song on the disc, however, may be its most subtle: "Church on White," which barely registers above a whisper, offers a heartfelt (but not weepy) elegy to a departed friend. Pavement diehards may miss the sharp turns of days gone by, but Stephen Malkmus proves it's possible to guide a smoother trip without settling in the middle of the road.
