About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

This is an unusual record. Bassist Charlie Haden and pianist Hank Jones perform a variety of spirituals, hymns and folk songs as duets. The traditional music (which includes such tunes as "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen," "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," "Sometimes I Feel like a Motherless Child" and "We Shall Overcome") are all performed respectfully and with reverence. These melodic yet subtly swinging interpretations hold one's interest throughout and reward repeated listenings. Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

October 26, 2001: This is a wonderful collection of folk songs, spirituals and hymns, played in strong yet serene arrangements by leading jazz musicians Hank Jones and Charlie Haden. The classic sound of piano and string bass is mixed well and all the tunes fit together to produce one of my favourite albums. Highlights include the mournful ''Sometimes I feel like a Motherless Child'' and the jubilant ''I've got a Robe, You've got a Robe''. The tracks have by no means been given the full on Jazz treatment, there is a fresh yet traditional feel to the arrangements and I've not met a person yet who doesn't like this album. I'm 99% sure that this will never be a waste of money... Enjoy it when you are feeling out of touch with the world!
