May 23, 2006: Starker plays very well but his Kodaly for solo cello is a little bit dry for me.i do not sense any emotions in his playing.its like the strings are not tightly gripped when he bows as a result the sound is rather loose.But when he is joined by Gingold sparks do fly but they are created by Gingold with his sweet sound of the violin I can only recommend this as good but not great.

June 06, 2002: This album is without a doubt, the best performance of Kodaly's Sonata for cello solo, Op 8 ever recorded. It is an oversight that it isn't listed with the rest of Janos Starker's playlist as Starker does the finest playing of the piece that I've ever found. Rich, robust, incredibly emotional, this CD is for those that feel passionately about the raw emotions of cello playing. Be prepared for drama, as Starker gives you every pennies worth. Forget Yo-Yo Ma's take on the piece (Kodaly's Sonata for cello solo, Op 8) in his recent CD, Starker surpasses him with master playing. I cannot recommend this CD enough. Bold and beautiful, play it loud and your neighbors will think you're a mad genius. Who knows, if you like this CD like I do, maybe you are.
